I haven't been posting or writing anything—no newsletters, no blog posts, no long Instagram captions. For some time I’ve been feeling negative about my jewelry. Not about the jewelry itself, but about promoting it. Especially about promoting it on Instagram.

For Love or Money

Recently I was listening to an episode of a podcast hosted by Kate Ahl, an entrepreneur I respect. Kate, a Pinterest expert who helps clients and others use Pinterest to gain exposure, was talking about how business owners should identify pins that are doing especially well on Pinterest and re-pin them repeatedly. She mentioned that some of her clients balk at this advice, objecting that it’s boring to pin the same thing over and over again. If that’s how you feel, she suggested, it might be time to ask yourself if you really want to be running a business, or if it would make more sense to do what you do as a hobby.

It’s Not Too Late

When I launched my business, I was over 40. I had a 12-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a job. It seemed a bit late to be adding another major endeavor, especially one I knew nothing about. I wondered if I was being naive or even irresponsible to think it could work out. But I really wanted to do it, and something compelled my to try.

Collaboration or Competition?

My jewelry line was born out of a desire to make beautiful things. When I started out, selling what I made hadn't occurred to me. I was looking for a creative outlet, I found jewelry, I fell in love, it was perfect. The end. But, like every love story, over time things got more complicated.
